Join us for the special performance with the new "Astor Club Trio", our official house band. The trio brings together three of Chicagos top native jazz musicians, fresh off their show stealing performances at the Chicago jazz festival this last summer. Jazz master and legendary bassist/songwriter Dennis Carrol is at the helm, leading two rising stars in the Chicago jazz scene, Lee Rothenberg on guitar and Neil Hemphill on drums. Comprised of musicians steeped in classic Chicago swing and soul, the trio nevertheless move into new directions as they are joined by various guests vocalists and players. Tonight's featured vocalist is Dee Alexander! Born on Chicago’s west side, Dee Alexander is one of the city's most gifted and respected vocalist/songwriters. Her talents span every music genre, from Gospel to R&B, Blues to Neo-Soul. Yet her true heart and soul are experienced in their purest form through Jazz. Growing up in a household steeped in recordings of Dinah Washington; Ms. Alexander names Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Chicago saxophonist Henry Huff among her major influences. ARTISTS RESIDENCY PROGRAM - MELISSA LEANDRO
Astor Club is pleased to announce a new artist-in-residence program to launch in September 2024. The Astor Artist Residency is curated by Astor club patron member Caryn Capotosto, a documentary producer, independent curator and founder of creative agency Museum & Crane. Four artists will be selected annually as artists-in-residence to hang their work and present an artist talk for members during the run of the exhibition. The program will kick off on Thursday, September 5th with Chicago artist Melissa Leandro. Melissa’s stunning handwoven textile works on canvas will be installed in the Astor Club foyer with an opening reception to be held on September 5th at 7pm. Come celebrate Astor Club’s mission of celebrating the visual arts in Chicago with the artist and esteemed members of the Chicago art community. Andy Brown and Petra Van Nuis Trio
The pairing of jazz vocalist Petra van Nuis and guitarist Andy Brown is one of those rare combinations where all parts seem to fit. As high school sweethearts at a performing arts school in Cincinnati, Petra and Andy grew up together as artists and have since spread their swinging sounds far and wide with several European tours and six CDs released in Japan. When they moved to Chicago, Petra and Andy sought out local legend trombonist Russ Phillips as a musical inspiration and mentor. Russ grew up in the wings watching his father, trombonist Russ Phillips Sr. play with Louis Armstrongs All Stars. Continuing in the tradition, Russ became a well-known and highly regarded performer around Chicago and nationally on the jazz festival circuit. In Chicago, these musicians regularly play prominent area venues including the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill and Andys Jazz Club, often as part of their larger Recession Seven band. In close collaboration with the Stradivari Society and Turkish Consulate General, Astor Club is presenting a special music double feature! Beginning at 5:00 pm, artist Philippe Quint will bring a sampling of rare Italian violins by Antonio Stradivari and Guiseppe Guarneri del Gesu and he will present a brief introduction/history/explanation of each of the instruments and then give a performance on his violin on loan through the Stradivari Society. Shortly after at 7:00 pm, Turkish Consulate General, Engin Turesin, will make some remarks and present artists from the Turkish Presidential Orchestra, who will play a unique performance of traditional Turkish music on traditional Turkish instruments. Jordan Christianson plays piano on the "24 Below" stage! Jordan grew up studying classical piano in Fargo, ND. After discovering jazz and performing at the 2007 Montreux Jazz Festival, he decided to pursue piano seriously. He graduated with a B.M. from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a M.M. from the University of Miami, both in jazz performance. He had many performance opportunities in school which culminated in 1st-place finishes in the small group and big band categories at the 2011 Eau Claire Jazz Festival and a 2012 Downbeat award with Frost Vocal Jazz 1. He took up photography at an early age and as a 20-year-old found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City.
