The pairing of jazz vocalist Petra van Nuis and guitarist Andy Brown is one of those rare combinations where all parts seem to fit. As high school sweethearts at a performing arts school in Cincinnati, Petra and Andy grew up together as artists and have since spread their swinging sounds far and wide with several European tours and six CDs released in Japan. When they moved to Chicago, Petra and Andy sought out local legend trombonist Russ Phillips as a musical inspiration and mentor. Russ grew up in the wings watching his father, trombonist Russ Phillips Sr. play with Louis Armstrongs All Stars. Continuing in the tradition, Russ became a well-known and highly regarded performer around Chicago and nationally on the jazz festival circuit. In Chicago, these musicians regularly play prominent area venues including the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill and Andys Jazz Club, often as part of their larger Recession Seven band. At the Astor Club, Petra, Andy and Russ pare down for an intimate chamber version of their larger ensemble.
